St. Mary Church held a Eucharistic Procession on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, Sunday, June 6 after the 11:00 am Mass. Fr. Nicholas Desimone led the procession through the neighborhood carrying the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance. Many attended following from the Mass and joining us from the parking lot as well.
Corpus Christi means “Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.” The central liturgical rite in the Catholic Church is the Mass containing both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Catholics believe that during Mass the bread and wine are consecrated and become the Body and Blood of Christ, the source and summit of the Catholic faith.
Processions are an ancient tradition dating back to Medieval Times and remind us that we are pilgrims on a journey following Jesus on “the Way” (an early title for the Church). By following the Lord physically, we give public witness and openly proclaim this truth. The procession headed west down Mendon Street, turned onto Capron Street, then onto Cross Street and then Oak Street back to St. Mary Church.
Immediately following the Eucharistic Procession, there was a parish picnic on the grounds. Parishoners and friends brought food, some grilled, and all enjoyed this special day.
